The Bachelor of Applied Social Science provides an opportunity for students to engage with theoretical concepts and practices at the interface between Indigenous knowledge systems and the western academy. The core units and the course specialisations are designed to privilege and advance the exploration and practical application of knowledges from the rich cultural traditions and contemporary social experiences of Indigenous peoples. The course promotes the capacity of culturally capable graduates to provide accountable leadership, advocate for and empower people and communities in their aspirations for effective participation in contemporary Australian social, cultural and economic life.
The course ensures that graduates demonstrate an ability to operate within broader society as active and culturally capable agents of change, able to apply what they learn in a culturally informed and respectful manner. Students have the opportunity to acquire and apply knowledge and skills in three core areas of significant importance for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians: Indigenous Social Policy, Indigenous resource Management and Indigenous Community Action. These specialised fields of study are tailored to prepare students for professional and/or further study or research that can contribute to, and further develop, effective and equitable engagement between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and the broader Australian community.
The course is offered through a range of flexible, multi-modal delivery options that include workshops, face-to-face classes and external study through Learnline.
Admission requirements are met by one of the following:
- Successful completion of the Northern Territory Certificate of Education and Training (or equivalent) and the awarding of an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) of at least 60*.
- Successful completion of a national qualification at Certificate IV level or higher.
- Successful completion of at least 0.5 year of full-time study (or equivalent) of a higher education degree/diploma.
- Overseas secondary or tertiary qualifications considered equivalent to the above Australian qualifications.
- Attainment of a STAT Multiple Choice score of 135 (or a score of 145 if prior to May 2010).
- Successful completion of the Tertiary Enabling Program, the ACIKE Preparation for Tertiary Success courses, or other recognised tertiary preparation course.
- Submission of an acceptable personal competencies statement and/or employment experience.
