Graduates of degree courses other then accounting may later wish to enhance their management skills or become professional accountants by undertaking a conversion course such as this MPA, which enables graduates with non-accounting or partial accounting backgrounds to meet the academic requirements for membership of CPA Australia (CPA), the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA) and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants of the UK (ACCA). The course focuses on contemporary knowledge and skills required for practice as a public or chartered accountant; effective management; accountability and control; and effective decision-making for financial success.

Studies in this Master of Professional Accounting course will provide the technical and conceptual skills required to become a competent accountant, and will develop students' abilities to analyse, criticise and synthesise various accounting and related principles, methods and techniques. The skills and knowledge gained from this course will prepare students to be effective managers or financial analysts. Graduates find employment as accountants or financial analysts, and may increase promotional opportunities in their existing occupations.

Successful completion of a recognised bachelor degree in any discipline.

Applicants who have fully satisfied the entry requirements of the accounting professional bodies in their first degree are not eligible for entry.Applicants who may have partially satisfied the entry requirements of the accounting professional bodies in their first degree are required to have their qualifications assessed by CPA Australia or The Institute of Chartered Accountant in Australia to ensure that they will exit with the academic qualification required for accreditation by the Australian Professional Accounting Bodies.

This is a conversion course that enables graduates with non-accounting backgrounds to meet the academic requirements for membership of CPA Australia, the ICAA and ACCA. This course is also available for students whose current qualifications only partially satisfy the application requirements of these accounting professional bodies. The course will equip students with contemporary knowledge and skills required for professional practice as a public or chartered accountant. The course will provide the technical and conceptual skills required in a competent accountant, and will develop students abilities to explore, analyse and synthesise various accounting and related principles, methods and techniques. Where students have prior CPA/ICAA assessed exemptions and require electives to complete the 12 units or 120 credit points, electives may be selected from the MBA, on approval of the Course Manager.

Applicants who already partially satisfy the requirements for applying for membership of CPA Australia or ICAA may exit the degree with a Graduate Certificate of Professional Accounting or a Graduate Diploma of Professional Accounting, providing the required accounting units have been completed. Students who undertake the program and wish to exit having successfully completed only four units but do not comply with the Professional Accounting requirements may exit with a Graduate Certificate in Business Administration. Students who have successfully completed eight or more units but less than the required 120 credit points and do not comply with the Professional Accounting requirements may exit with a Graduate Diploma of Business Administration.

Students wishing to take the special 8-unit pathway to professional entry must take eight defined units that permit their exit with a Graduate Diploma of Professional Accounting these students should be aware that there might be restrictions placed on their advancement within the professional body of their choice.

 

A candidate must successfully complete units totalling 120 credit points as detailed below. All units are valued at 10 credit points unless indicated.

Students who intend exiting this award with a Graduate Diploma of Professional Accounting (GDPA) to satisfy the 8-unit pathway into the professional bodies should note the two accreditation bodies ICAA and ICA Australia have different membership requirements.

ICAA entry requirements for the 8-unit pathway at GDPA level require all units marked * to be completed. 

CPA Australia entry requirements for the 8-unit pathway at GDPA level require all units marked # to be completed.

The full professional accreditation requirements include all units other than the core unit PRBA031 and the specialist electives PRBM022 and PRBM030.
