This vocationally orientated and student centred course provides students with the career and professional skills needed in a rapidly changing business environment. It allows for flexibility of study and prepares students for careers in a variety of business fields. In addition, communication, presentation and problem-solving skills are emphasised.

This course meets the needs of various professional bodies and the community. Students have a wide choice of units based upon their personal and career interests.

After completing the equivalent of one year full time study, students will have the option of transferring into the Bachelor of Accounting, which directly addresses the requirements for membership of CPA Australia and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia. Alternatively students may select the appropriate units for professional body membership within the Bachelor of Commerce.

Pathways for VET to Higher Education
Guaranteed credit transfer arrangements are available to students commencing a Bachelor degree at Charles Darwin University with completed Certificate IV, Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree qualifications in the same field or discipline at Charles Darwin University. The course consists of common units, core units, specialist electives and general electives. Specialisations may be available in accounting, economics, human resources, management, marketing and organisational informatics.



A candidate must successfully complete units totalling 240 credit points as detailed below. All units are valued at 10 credit points unless otherwise indicated.

Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce prior to 2009 will note that the Course Structure above indicates a change to the Organisational Informatics Specialist Elective units. Students who commenced this Specialisation prior to 2009, and have completed HIT151 are not required to complete HIT125.

COURSE CHANGES and TRANSITION arrangements - 2010
Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce prior to 2010 will note that the core units indicate some change.

  • LAW101 Introduction to Law has been replaced by LWZ100A Introduction to Legal Studies;
Students who have completed LAW101 prior to 2010 should not enrol in LWZ100A.

  Students Commencing in Semester 1

The Recommended Study Plan provided below is suitable for a student commencing in semester 1 and enrolling in a standard full time load.  Students entering this course with advanced standing, or wishing to vary their study plan due to work, personal, financial or other reasons should use the table as a guide to create an individual study plan. 

When designing an individual study plan:

♦    ensure Common Units are completed in the first year of study;

♦    maintain the basic order in which units are to be attempted; and

♦    check the assumed knowledge for each unit as some 200 and 300 level units assume you have completed foundation unit/s in the subject area at a lower level.  200 level units have the unit code which includes a number starting with 200 i.e. PMO201.

An individual study plan for each of the seven areas of specialisation is provided.  Elective units may be selected from any undergraduate higher education units on offer (in any discipline), however, a list of business units is provided to assist those students interested in completing additional business units as electives.

Completion of certain specialisations and the appropriate selection of elective units will allow a person to obtain membership of a variety of professional bodies including CPA Australia, the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA)and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants of the UK (ACCA).

Commonwealth Supported places are available in this course to students who meet one of the following residency requirements: (a) Australian Citizenship; (b) a New Zealand citizen or a permanent resident visa holder who will be resident within Australia for the duration of the unit.
