This course prepares students to be teachers in early childhood settings, working with children aged 3 to 8.

This course meets both national and local needs for early childhood teachers of exemplary practice committed to enhancing educational outcomes for all children. It has particular emphasis on improving the teaching-learning relationship in the centre or classroom, raising awareness of issues surrounding Indigenous education and developing an informed, evidence based approach to learning and teaching in early childhood.

Police check: students must have cleared a Police Check and/or Working with Children check before they can undertake practice teaching. Students whose Police Checks and/or Working with Children check are not cleared by the education sectors will not be able to undertake practice teaching and will not therefore be able to complete the requirements of the course.

This course description has been updated since the publication of 2010 information through SATAC and the Charles Darwin University Course Guide.

The course has core education units, professional experience/practicum units, knowledge/discipline units and two common units.

The course is designed to develop professional knowledge and skills for teaching children aged 3 to 8 years; prepare for new and changing educational roles as early childhood educators; develop reflective practitioner skills; explore in greater depth the theory to practice nexus of early childhood education as we move towards the second decade of the 21st Century; ensure continuing awareness of the environmental and cultural influences on teaching and learning in early childhood, and better understand the needs of learners and communities with diverse linguistic and cultural orientations, including Indigenous learners.

The course is practical in nature with students having supervised professional experience in schools / learning sites from first semester in first year. There are six professional experience blocks that require full-time commitment in each year of the course with the final practicum undertaken over a full school term. Students are encouraged to undertake some field/professional experience in remote schools. External students normally complete their professional experience in their home towns.

This course can be completed by fully external study (online) or in a blend of online and internal formats. There is a high level of on-line study and interaction for all students.

Prospective students should have the relevant state teacher registration authority and relevant employment authority (eg. State/Territory department of education, or Catholic Education Office) confirm their eligibility for teacher registration* and suitability for employment.
