Guaranteed credit transfer arrangements are available to students commencing a Bachelor degree at Charles Darwin University with completed Certificate IV, Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree qualifications in the same field or discipline at Charles Darwin University. Students who hold completed qualifications should refer to the additional information provided by using one of the following links:

For information about credit transfer available to students with complete or incomplete study at this or other Institutions refer to Pathways for Higher Education to Higher Education

Students complete two common units, 12 units of study in the Arts course; 13 units of study in Education and 2 elective units.

A typical course pattern will be two years of Arts and Electives followed by two years of Education and Electives.

Students have the option of choosing one or two specialisations for the Arts degree. A single specialisation consists of 12 units from one specialist area of study. For the two specialisations option the student must complete 6 units from 2 specialist areas of study. The education course has core education units, professional experience/practicum units and knowledge/discipline units. Students can specialise in Early Childhood, Primary, and Middle School and Secondary teaching.

The education course is practical in nature with students having professional experience in schools / learning sites from the third year of their course. Professional experience blocks require full-time commitment in each year of the course with the final practicum undertaken over a full school term. Students are encouraged to undertake some field/professional experience in remote schools. External students normally complete their professional experience in their home towns.

Students who complete the Bachelor of Teaching and Learning are eligible for Teacher Registration in the Northern Territory. Students who intend to seek employment outside the Northern Territory following course completion should, before enrolment, have the relevant state teacher registration authority and relevant employment authority (eg. State department of education, or Catholic Education Office) confirm their eligibility and suitability for registration and employment.

This course requires a high level of on-line work especially for external students.

The Bachelor of Arts (Honours) is available for entry to suitable candidates with a Bachelor of Arts.

COURSE CHANGES and TRANSITION arrangements

Bachelor of Arts
Students will see on the University web pages that the Specialisation sequences offered in the Bachelor of Arts have changed in 2008. Continuing students who enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts prior to 2008 may elect to continue in their existing Specialisation. However, the changes to the course introduced in 2008 will not affect continuing students who wish to tranfer into one of the new Specialisations.

Bachelor of Teaching and Learning
Students enrolled in this course prior to 2008 will note there have been some unit code changes for 2008. Although the overall content of the teaching and learning course remains unchanged merging the theory and practice components into single integrated units simplifies the overall organisational structure of the course and ensures a more streamlined enrolment process.

Summary of the Changes:
The integration of PTLxxx units (professional experience practice in schools) with Teaching and Learning (ETLxxx) theory units will improve the articulation between theory and practice.
ETP110 Teaching and Learning 1 (replaces ETL110 + PTL110 (0cp) from Semester 1 2008)
*ETP120 Teaching and Learning 2 (replaces ETL120 + PTL220 from Semester 2 2008)
*ETP210 Teaching and Learning 3 (20cp) (replaces ETL210 + PTL200) from Semester 1 2009)
ETP320 Teaching and Learning 6 (30cp) (replaces ETL310 + PTL410 + PTL420 (20cp) from Semester 2 2008)

*Due to a redistribution of content, load and credit points between these four units all students who have completed ETL120 and PTL220 (10cp) in Semester 2 2007 must enrol for ETL210 and PTL200 (20cp) in Semester 1 2008. ETP210 (20cp) will be introduced in Semester 1 2009. Any student who has completed only one part of the integrated units listed above must contact the course advisor, Lorraine Connell on (08) 8946 6149 prior to finalising enrolment for 2008.

Other changes include:
EIP310 Teaching Indigenous Learners (unit title change)

 Students Commencing in Semester 1

Study plans for 2011 are accurate as at 3 August 2010. The University reserves the right to make changes up until 1 October 2010.  2011 unit offering and fee information will be available from 1 October 2010.

The Recommended Study Plan provided below is suitable for a student commencing in semester 1 and enrolling in a standard full time load.  Students entering this course with advanced standing, or wishing to vary their study plan due to work, personal, financial or other reasons should use the table as a guide to create an individual study plan.

When designing an individual study plan:

♦    ensure Common Units are completed in the first year of study;

♦    maintain the basic order in which units are to be attempted; and

♦    check the assumed knowledge for each unit as some 200 and 300 level units assume you have completed foundation unit/s in the subject area at a lower level.  200 level units have the unit code which includes a number starting with 200 i.e. ETP210.

Students Commencing in Semester 2

Study plans for 2011 are accurate as at 3 August 2010. The University reserves the right to make changes up until 1 October 2010.  2011 unit offering and fee information will be available from 1 October 2010.

The Recommended Study Plan provided below is suitable for a student commencing in semester 2 and enrolling in a standard full time load.  Students entering this course with advanced standing, or wishing to vary their study plan due to work, personal, financial or other reasons should use the table as a guide to create an individual study plan.

When designing an individual study plan:

♦    ensure Common Units are completed in the first year of study;

♦    maintain the basic order in which units are to be attempted; and

♦    check the assumed knowledge for each unit as some 200 and 300 level units assume you have completed foundation unit/s in the subject area at a lower level.  200 level units have the unit code which includes a number starting with 200 i.e. ETP210.

TEACHING AND LEARNING UNITS
Units with a Teaching School experience component ie Teaching and Learning Units, must be completed in order and only one Teaching and Learning unit can be undertaken each semester. The order is as follows:
ETP110 Teaching and Learning 1 - 10 weekly day visits
ETP120 Teaching and Learning 2 - 5 weekly day visits plus 1 week supervised placement block
ETP210 Teaching and Learning 3 - 5 weekly day visits plus 3 weeks supervised placement block
ETP320 Teaching and Learning 6 - 12 weeks supervised extended placement block
