This course aims to develop an understanding of and respect for Indigenous knowledges and engagement of Indigenous people in academic research processes. Students enrolled in this course are familiarised with and develop an understanding of key issues surrounding and protocols relates to research with and for Indigenous people. Students are involved in research processes which can be focussed upon Indigenous policy development, Indigenous systems of governance, intellectual and cultural property rights and Indigenous economies. Special focus is placed upon Indigenous peoples' engagement in the economic use and management of land and water resources, the skills and knowledge to record and represent knowledge and country in appropriate ways and the ability to negotiate and communicate between cultural groups.

Students are encouraged to be self-reflective on their own attitudes and practices and appreciate the social and cultural diversity of their research. The Honours course prepares graduates from any relevant degree program to engage in research activities in a wide range of disciplines that occur within the Australian cultural, historical, environmental and social contexts, with a special focus on Indigenous issues.

Successful completion of a recognised bachelors degree or equivalent in an Indigenous Cultures, Indigenous Knowledges, or Natural Resource Management discipline or field with a grade point average of credit or better.

Additional Admission Requirements

Applicants must contact the Australian Centre of Indigenous Knowledge and Education on (08) 8946 6482 to discuss a potential project and supervision prior to submitting an application.




Successful completion of this course requires the submission of a thesis (50%) and the completion of associated coursework in collaborative and multidisciplinary research theory and practices in preparation for engagement in primary research activities. Some elective choice is available in the coursework component of the Honours degree in consultation with the School of Indigenous Knowledges.



A candidate must successfully complete units totalling 80 credit points as detailed below.

  • completed both CMR401 and CMR403 will be able to follow their current progression;
  • completed either CMR401 or CMR403 will be required to complete CMR406


The following unit codes and/or titles have been changed:
  • CIK300 and CIK301 have been discontinued and merged into a new unit called CIK305 Cultural Transactions: Communication and Negotiation
  • CIK310and CIK320 have been discontinued and merged into a new unit called CIK340 Global Perspectives on Indigenous Nations
  • CMR404 has been discontinued and the content has been included in CMR406
