This course prepares students to be teachers in Early Childhood, Primary, Middle Schooling or Vocational Education and Training sectors (VET in Schools). It is also suitable for preparing students to work at senior levels within the non-school early childhood education and care sector. Students considering early childhood teaching (children aged 3 - 8 years) should also refer to the Bachelor of Teaching and Learning (Early Childhood). Students interested in senior secondary teaching should select one of the combined degree options.

This course is available in fast-track mode: students can elect to complete this four year degree in three years. More information about this option is available on the CDU web site.

This course meets both national and local need for teachers of exemplary practice committed to enhancing educational outcomes for all children and young adults. It has particular emphasis on improving the teaching-learning relationship in the classroom, raising awareness of issues surrounding Indigenous education and developing an informed, evidence based approach to learning and teaching in Early Childhood, Primary, Middle School and VET settings.

People with a trade qualification and experience in a relevant industry who are interested in teaching at secondary and VET level can apply to have their experience and previous qualification recognised and fast-tracked for a VET in Schools qualification.

Note: Full Advanced Standing of 140 credit points only available to tradespersons with five years experience and a Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training with experience preferred at the supervisory level of one year.

All applicants must indicate their preferred specialisation by selecting a stream code from the list below. Applicants' chances of selection will not be affected by the stream they choose since the cutoff rank will be the same for all streams.

Pathways for VET to Higher Education
Guaranteed credit transfer arrangements are available to students commencing a Bachelor degree at Charles Darwin University with completed Certificate IV, Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree qualifications in the same field or discipline at Charles Darwin University. Students who hold completed qualifications should refer to the additional information provided by using one of the following links:

For information about credit transfer available to students with complete or incomplete study at this or other Institutions refer to Pathways for Higher Education to Higher Education

The course has core education units, professional experience/practicum units, knowledge/discipline units and two common units. Students can specialise in Early Childhood, Primary, and Middle School teaching from second year although the course is flexible enough to provide avenues for students to change their specialisation. Students seeking a VET specialisation join the program according to credits granted.

The course is practical in nature with students having professional experience in schools / learning sites from first semester in first year. There are six professional experience blocks that require full-time commitment in each year of the course with the final practicum undertaken over a full school term. Students are encouraged to undertake some field/professional experience in remote schools. External students normally complete their professional experience in their home towns.

Students who complete the Bachelor of Teaching and Learning are eligible for Teacher Registration in the Northern Territory. Students who intend to seek employment outside the Northern Territory following course completion should, before enrolment, have the relevant state teacher registration authority and relevant employment authority (eg. State department of education, or Catholic Education Office) confirm their eligibility and suitability for registration and employment.

This course requires a high level of on-line work especially for external students.

Students wanting to select the VET in Schools teaching stream must hold previous trade qualifications and a minimum of 5 years recent trade experience.

A maximum of 140 credit points advanced standing will be available to students who
a. hold previous trade qualifications with a minimum 5 years recent trade experience and
b. hold a Teaching and Assessment Certificate (or a Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training).

Please note that all students must hold a current Teaching and Assessment Certificate (or a Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training) in order to graduate.

A candidate must successfully complete units totalling 320 credit points (cp) as detailed below. All units are valued at 10 credit points unless otherwise indicated. A summary table of course requirements by specialisation is provided at the end of this section.

Students Commencing in Semester 1

Study plans for 2011 are accurate as at 3 August 2010. The University reserves the right to make changes up until 1 October 2010.  2011 unit offering and fee information will be available from 1 October 2010.

The Recommended Study Plan provided below is suitable for a student commencing in semester 1 and enrolling in a standard full time load.  Students entering this course with advanced standing, or wishing to vary their study plan due to work, personal, financial or other reasons should use the table as a guide to create an individual study plan.

When designing an individual study plan:

♦    ensure Common Units are completed in the first year of study;

♦    maintain the basic order in which units are to be attempted; and

♦    check the assumed knowledge for each unit as some 200 and 300 level units assume you have completed foundation unit/s in the subject area at a lower level.  200 level units have the unit code which includes a number starting with 200 i.e. ETL212.

Students undertaking individual study programs should note the following additional requirements:
