This course provides postgraduate level public health training that is particularly accessible to people working in Central and Northern Australia and neighbouring regions. It provides an opportunity for people to gain a sound introduction to public health and to study selected public health topics in some depth.

This course provides students with an understanding of the scope and principles of public health, advanced skills in interpreting health information and in interpreting and conducting basic health research, an understanding of the principles of health service management and planning, the opportunity to study a range of specific public health topics within the Indigenous Public Health and International and Tropical Public Health sequences together with the option of completing a thesis.

The course is offered on-line through distance education and compulsory attendance at a week-long residential school each semester.

Career opportunities for graduates include the non-government and government sector in areas of health administration; health policy development; environmental health; womens/mens health; health promotion; health economics; epidemiology/biostatistics; international health; alcohol and other drugs; communicable and non-communicable disease control.

Successful completion of a recognised bachelors degree of four years duration or equivalent.

There are two options within this course structure - completion through coursework only or a combination of coursework and research treatise. All students must complete the core units and may select specialist electives or a combination of specialist electives and the research treatise in consultation with staff from the Menzies School of Health Research.

Specialist elective units may be selected from two sequences:
  • Indigenous Public Health which comprises units with a distinct Indigenous Health focus and
  • International and Tropical Public Health which comprises units with an International or Tropical Health focus.

 



A candidate must successfully complete units totaling 120 credit points as detailed below.
