The Master of Health Practice (Nurse Practitioner) is a clinically focused program for practicing nurses and midwives with at least three years' clinical experience in their specialty practice. The course is built on the ANMC (2006) National Competency Standards for Nurse Practitioners. It will enable advanced practice nurses/midwives to incorporate application of high-level knowledge and skills into extended practice a variety of complex situations, to develop their professional efficacy, autonomy and accountability, and clinical leadership in professional health practice.

This course is designed to extend knowledge and skills already gained in practice and through post graduate study. It aims to build on a specialisation within a systematic and coherent body of knowledge. The course emphasises advanced and extended clinical practice and clinical leadership within cross-cultural clinical practice.

Police Check: Each State and Territory in Australia has requirements for students undertaking courses involving clinical placements to provide documented evidence of relevant health and security checks, eg completed immunisation requirements, criminal record checks and/or working with children clearances and/or fitness to practice requirements.

Students must have met the above requirements that are mandatory in their state or territory before they can undertake those units that include clinical placements. Students who have not met these mandatory requirements and not been cleared by the clinical sector to undertake clinical experience will not be able to undertake clinical practice experience and will not therefore be able to complete the requirements of the course.

This 80 credit point course consists of core and project units building on the foundation of specialist knowledge and skills, evidence-based practice, cultural safety and introductory pharmacology acquired at the Graduate Diploma level. The core units address the ANMC (2006) National Competency Standards for Nurse Practitioners and encompass acquisition of knowledge and skills, critical thinking, decision making and complex problem solving required for advanced and extended dynamic practice, professional efficacy and clinical leadership.

In addition to the core extended clinical practice, pharmacology for prescribers and practice evaluation units, students will undertake two individually negotiated project units in which they can explore in depth an area of professional interest relevant to the advanced and extended role of the nurse practitioner.

Both the content and assessment strategies used in the program require ongoing supported access to clinical settings in which the candidate can be mentored in the development of extended practice knowledge and skills. This clinical mentorship is an essential component of the course structure. An intensive is required for some units with the remainder of teaching material using on-line delivery.

Students who have not met the clinical practice requirements will not be able to complete the requirements of this course.
