This course is designed to extend the student's previous professional experiences and provide opportunities to reflect on and critique knowledge, skills and attitudes in relation to contemporary evidence, research and literature and apply this to the practice setting.

The course will assist students in providing support to new parents. In addition to the traditional knowledge and skills around growth monitoring and developmental assessments, graduates of this course will understand the importance of psychosocial assessment and the central role of parents in the child¿s environment. It will strengthen the practitioner¿s role in promoting links with other services and prepare them to work in partnership with families in a strengths based model as opposed to the traditional problem-oriented models, commonly found in health services. The course is flexibly designed to meet the needs of rural and remote students as well as those in urban centres.

This course will prepare students to practice as professional and contemporary child and family health clinicians, sensitive to the cultural needs of consumers in acute, rural and remote environments; to be reflective practitioners, skilled in consuming and conducting research and evidence based enquiries.

Police check: Each State and Territory in Australia has requirements for students undertaking courses involving clinical placements to provide documented evidence of relevant health and security checks, eg completed immunisation requirements, criminal record checks and/or working with children clearances and/or fitness to practice requirements.

Students must have met the above requirements that are mandatory in their state or territory before they can undertake those units that include clinical placements. Students who have not met these mandatory requirements and not been cleared by the clinical sector to undertake clinical experience will not be able to undertake clinical practice experience and will not therefore be able to complete the requirements of the course.

The course comprises five core units, one specialist elective unit and two practicum based units (clinical experience). The clinical component of the course is vital in the preparation of child and family health clinicians. Clinical experience will be attained through a variety of settings, both within community health care facilities and other community services.

A minimum of 320 hours of clinical experience is required throughout the course, though many of the students will be already working in the specialty area or are encouraged to do so.

The course is available through distance education with one week of residential schools in three of the eight subjects. These residentials are not compulsory but highly recommended.

It is essential that the chosen clinical venue can support a student both in fulfilling the clinical requirements of the course and in providing appropriate clinical supervision and support. Students who have not met the clinical practice requirements will not be able to complete the requirements of this course.
