This course is designed to advance the professional development of senior practicing managers and other professionals in the field of business and management. Graduates of this course will be equipped with skills to make a key contribution in their areas of business specialisation. This course focuses on contemporary business administration issues, to develop high-calibre, well-rounded professionals with specialised knowledge and managerial competencies. It is expected that candidates will contribute to the development and synthesis of new knowledge concerning the theory and practice of business administration, and on graduation will be expected to be able to perform as professional managers and management consultants in a variety of international, regional, national and organisational environments; mentors in the practice and research of business administration; leaders in the knowledge and theory of business administration; and role models for the practice of business administration.

Admission to Charles Darwin University higher education coursework programs are received and processed by the South Australian Tertiary Admissions Centre (SATAC). Successful completion of a relevant Honours degree or equivalent, eg a masters degree in management, business administration or business related discipline. All applicants must have at least three years professional experience in management or management related fields of consulting, education, training or organisational research.

Applicants with relevant graduate qualifications in Business such as an MBA from a recognised tertiary institution may be eligible for advanced standing up to a maximum of 120 credit points.


This course is completed in two stages. The first stage is based on completion of a relevant graduate qualification such as a Master of Business Administration from a recognised tertiary institution. Students may receive advanced standing of up to a maximum of 120 credit points if they have completed a MBA in management, business administration or business related discipline.

The second stage exposes students to a intensive introduction to applied research methodology prior to completing a consulting report, literature review and research proposal, before completing the final dissertation.



A candidate must successfully complete units totaling 240 credit points as detailed below. All units are valued at 10 credit points unless indicated.

COURSE CHANGES and TRANSITION arrangements


Students enrolled in the Doctor of Business Administration prior to 2010 will note there have been some changes to the course :

Summary of the Changes
The number of core units has been reduced to 40 credit points and the 2010 course includes a Professional Practice component worth 40 credit points.
Students who commenced this course prior to 2010 are not required to complete the Professional Practice component but are not precluded from undertaking it.

Transition Arrangements
Students who were admitted to the course prior to 2010 and were enrolled in the program in 2009, have the option of
1. either completing the course under the pre-2008, 2009 or 2010 conditions; or
2. depending on the number of units completed already, choose to complete the course under the 2010 award conditions.
