This inservice course offers continuing professional development to early childhood educators working in schools and who are seeking to upgrade to a specialist 4 year early childhood teaching qualification that is eligible for teacher registration in the NT.

The program is designed to extend and develop professional knowledge and skills of early childhood professionals; prepare for new and changing educational roles as early childhood educators; develop reflective practitioner skills; explore in greater depth the theory to practice nexus of early childhood education as we move towards the second decade of the 21st Century; ensure continuing awareness of the environmental and cultural influences on teaching and learning in early childhood, and better understand the needs of learners and communities with diverse linguistic and cultural orientations, including Indigenous learners.



Police check: students must have cleared a Police Check and/or Working with Children check before they can undertake practice teaching. Students whose Police Checks and/or Working with Children check are not cleared by the education sectors will not be able to undertake practice teaching and will not therefore be able to complete the requirements of the course.

The course includes 2 core practicum units and 6 curriculum units as specialist electives that are designed to prepare inservice teachers for the challenges of early childhood education in the 21st century.

The course is practical in nature with students having professional experience in schools / learning sites. There are two professional experience blocks of 30 days each that require full-time commitment. Students are encouraged to undertake some field/professional experience in remote schools. External students normally complete their professional experience in their home towns. Students who have five or more years of experience of teaching children aged 4 to 8 in formal school settings may be eligible for advanced standing for one or both of these units.

This course can be completed by fully external study (online) or by a blend of online and internal formats. There is a high level of online study and interaction for all students.

Prospective students should have the relevant state teacher registration authority and relevant employment authority (eg. State/Territory department of education, or Catholic Education Office) confirm their eligibility for teacher registration and suitability for employment.

Students who complete the Bachelor of Teaching and Learning Inservice (Early Childhood) are eligible to apply to the Teacher Registration Board of the Northern Territory for teacher registration.

A candidate must successfully complete units totalling 80 credit points as detailed below. All units are valued at 10 credit points unless indicated.
