This course prepares Registered Nurses to work as professional and contemporary midwives, utilising a framework of woman-centred care and within a variety of models of care. The graduate will be capable of meeting the diverse needs of Australian women at all points along the childbirth journey: in urban, rural and remote environments. Graduates of this course will be eligible to apply for authorisation to practice as a midwife in any state or territory of Australia.

Police check: Each State and Territory in Australia has requirements for students undertaking courses involving clinical placements to provide documented evidence of relevant health and security checks, eg completed immunisation requirements, criminal record checks and/or working with children clearances and/or fitness to practice requirements.

Students must have met the above requirements that are mandatory in their state or territory before they can undertake those units that include clinical placements. Students who have not met these mandatory requirements and not been cleared by the clinical sector to undertake clinical experience will not be able to undertake clinical practice experience and will not therefore be able to complete the requirements of the course.

The course comprises theoretical and practical units with accompanying clinical experience. The units cover contemporary Australian midwifery practice together with biophysical, sociological and cultural perspectives of midwifery care. Professional issues in midwifery and the evidence that underpins practice are included.

The 32 week clinical component of the course is vital in the preparation of midwives and centres on the development of professional competencies, as set out by the Australian Nursing & Midwifery Council (2006). A one week residential school may be required for some units with the remainder of teaching material using on-line delivery.

Students are normally expected to complete clinical practice hours within the semester in which they enrol. It is essential that the chosen clinical venue can support a student both in fulfilling the clinical requirements of the course and in providing appropriate clinical supervision and support. Students who have not met the clinical practice requirements will not be able to complete the requirements of this course.

There is a compulsory one week residential school each semester for all students enrolling in this course with the remainder being an on-line or a print-based education package. There is also a mandatory requirement of 5 days of face to face workshops in association with the unit HEA444 Partnerships in Practice. This unit is based on the Hilton Davis Family Partnerships Training and students may receive some credit if they have completed the training.

There is a compulsory one week residential school each semester for all students enrolling in this course with the remainder being an on-line or a print-based education package.
