Unit Description

This unit examines typical residential scale construction with particular emphasis placed on building materials; their properties, historical relevance, development and application; building terminology and construction methods used in common construction practice. Typical masonry, timber and steel construction systems will be compared and evaluated for residential scale buildings.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Describe the properties, historical relevance, development and application of materials used in architecture.
2.	Define a range of building terminologies applicable to the construction of residential scale buildings.
3.	Evaluate, compare and select appropriate residential scale materials and construction systems based on a range of criteria.
4.	Apply materials and construction knowledge to simple architectural projects.
