Unit Description

Advanced Rehabilitation focuses on specialized areas of audiological clinical practice. This unit introduces students to the theoretical foundations of cochlear implants, middle-ear devices, bone conduction hearing devices, as well as sound intolerance conditions, including tinnitus and hyperacusis. Through a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical applications, students will gain expertise in providing high-quality, evidence-based care for the assessment and management of complex auditory conditions across the lifespan. Students are expected to attend a 5-day face-to-face intensive at the Casuarina Campus, Darwin as part of their learning for this unit. This intensive will take place during the same week as clinical exams for AUD524. Students will be expected to pay for their intensive related expenses such as transport and accommodation.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Critique, evaluate, and synthesise relevant literature to inform evidence-based clinical practice in the management of complex auditory conditions.
2.	Differentiate between conventional amplification options and alternative devices by drawing on individualised client requirements and clinical evidence.
3.	Synthesise complex information from assessment results, literature, and manufacturers to make informed clinical decisions and management plans in the recommendation and management of specialised hearing devices, such as cochlear implants, middle ear devices, and bone conduction devices.
4.	Create individualised, evidence-based rehabilitation plans for clients with sound intolerance, including tinnitus and hyperacusis, to optimise client goals and reduce sound-related distress.
