Unit Description

This unit provides an introduction to Chinese language (Mandarin) for students with little or no prior knowledge of the language. Students learn fundamental oral and written conversation that is designed to guide them to achieve a basic level of proficiency. In addition to learning how to represent sounds in the Pinyin system of transcription, students will learn the rudiments of writing Hanzi characters (40 - 60 characters). Upon completion of the unit, students will have a solid foundation to enable further study in Chinese language (Mandarin).

2.	Apply language skills to consolidate language competence and proficiency.
3.	Discuss and compare the cross-cultural and cross-linguistic themes of Chinese culture from traditional to contemporary civilisation.
