How do you approach the process of creative work from the perspective of place?
We live and study in a part of the world that is steeped in the ancient associations Indigenous people have with place and their socio-cultural and creative responses to it. This unit instils the practice of observing and engaging in the landscapes, the natural and built environments, and the sociocultural contexts of your connection to place and how you respond in terms of your creative practice. Engaging with Indigenous Australians to begin to understand their connection to country and the importance of place will provide the opportunity to review and discuss the diversity and significance of Australian Indigenous creative practices in contemporary art. In the light of the need to engage ethically in intercultural spaces, students and teachers will reflect upon and share approaches to experiencing, researching and responding to place in creative practice.
You will learn about Indigenous Australians' connection to country and the importance of place in Indigenous creative and cultural practices. The unit provides the opportunity for you to discuss and review the range and significance of Australian Indigenous creative practices in contemporary art through case studies with particular focus on Indigenous arts in the north of Australia and their historical impact.
Note: participation in scheduled classes either in person or online is essential to learn through shared discussion.
