Unit Description

Do you want to create quality sound or music recordings as either a performer or producer?

This unit introduces students to the practical skills to record and edit sound using industry-standard software. Students learn through the production of sound recording exercises and projects, gaining skills as a performer/presenter (eg. as voice-over artist or journalist) and as an audio technician/producer (eg. recording in studio for music bands or podcasts). This unit allows you to reflect on the techniques used in the recording process and how to improve the quality of your sound recording work.

The unit provides the opportunity to learn:

fundamental physics of sound and spatial acoustics
audio editing techniques
signal flow of a basic sound recording set-up
how to capture a range of sound sources
how to identify and use microphones.

Note: Internal students will have access to sound and studio equipment at the Casuarina campus. External students will need to have access to or purchase a basic microphone and audio interface to participate in this unit.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Identify hardware and software and instrumental and vocal practices suited to recording sound.
2.	Apply sound recording and mixing techniques, ensuring safe, inclusive and ethical practices.
3.	Recognise and utilise different forms of technology and creative practices to record voice, instruments, and sounds.
4.	Implement practical and theoretical approaches to produce sound recordings to engage an audience.
5.	Examine and modify creative work in response to feedback and reflection.
