Unit Description

The unit provides an understanding of the methods and calculations involved in designing reinforced steel elements as per Australian Standards AS4100. This includes the design of steel beams and girders to Australian Standards AS4100; design of tension and compression members; the effects of local and lateral buckling; design of bolted and welded steel connections; effects of fire and corrosion on steel structures. Students will have the opportunity to critically evaluate different design methods and apply their integrated knowledge to practical situations.
It is recommended that student enrol in ENG569 Structural Analysis in the same semester. Students unable to enrol in ENG567 and ENG569 concurrently should complete ENG569 before attempting ENG567 for best sequencing.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Explain, evaluate and integrate the concepts of limit states design for structural steel elements.
2.	Analyse and design steel beams, girders and trusses.
3.	Critically analyse and evaluate factors affecting durability of steel structures to develop solutions for a range of different professional situations.
4.	Apply effective communication methods, including project and practical reports, to convey ideas and principles related to design of steel structures.
