Geospatial technologies transform how we work and look at the world around us. The spatial problem-solving approach can unravel many problems in today's world. These are now being recognised for various vocations, industries, and businesses.
In this unit, you will learn how to appropriately collect spatial data, assess spatial data for errors, aggregate these data, apply the latest spatial tools and modelling techniques, examine and interpret model outputs, make decisions based on the results, and effectively share and communicate your findings.
Case studies may include, but are not limited to, Environmental Sciences, Forestry, Agriculture, Epidemiology, Demography, Health, Urban Planning, Mining, Disaster and Emergency Management, Tourism, Business, and Marketing. Students develop theoretical understanding and technical skills while selecting and applying the appropriate spatial analysis techniques to address the given scenario. The unit concludes with a project where the student collects real-world data from their chosen field and uses the methods they learned throughout the semester to address a problem of significant interest to them. The student will also learn oral and written communication skills and the project management of extensive data collection.
Students who have not undertaken the pre-requisite ENV508 but possess equivalent knowledge (such as GIS work experience) can submit a Special Enrolment through eForms. Include the previous knowledge in the "comments" field in the form.
