Unit Description

Aquatic ecosystems are amongst the most threatened globally. Effective management is necessary to protect and restore these vital ecosystems. This unit focuses on applying understanding of aquatic ecology to address key management issues in the context of current policy and management frameworks. The unit considers the perspectives of a wide range of stakeholders and critically evaluates natural resource management in aquatic ecosystems. The unit links theory with practice, with an emphasis on the management of aquatic ecosystems and associated resources (e.g. fisheries) in Australia.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Critically analyse and synthesise key aquatic management issues and the information needed to address these issues.
2.	Synthesise and apply aquatic ecology principles and data to address complex resource management issues.
3.	Evaluate aquatic resource policy and management activities and their federal, state and territory contexts.
4.	Integrate detailed knowledge of different stakeholder values and perspectives into aquatic resource management.
5.	Evaluate and contextualise historic use of aquatic resources and its effects on aquatic ecosystems.
6.	Evaluate the application of co-management frameworks to aquatic ecosystems.
