Unit Description

In this unit, preservice teachers will learn concepts and processes for the constructive teaching and learning and assessment of Chemical and Biological sciences appropriate for primary school students. Preservice teachers will engage with scientific content, inquiry skills and planning, and designing learning experiences that will develop a repertoire of teaching strategies, pedagogical content knowledge, and management skills. Preservice teachers will be required to construct a repertoire of context-specific formative and summative assessment practices to provide targeted constructive feedback.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Articulate and construct knowledge about the concepts in Chemical and Biological Sciences, including Indigenous knowledges.
2.	Analyse, synthesise and communicate a range of challenging scientific inquiries, with associated risk assessments.
3.	Demonstrate the development of scientific literacy and communication skills.
4.	Critique personal constructions of teaching and learning of chemical and biological science concepts.
5.	Construct a repertoire of context-specific formative and summative assessment practices to provide targeted constructive feedback to promote learning.
6.	Demonstrate pedagogical content knowledge through a scaffolded lesson sequence for chemistry and biology containing clear explanations of manageable learning chunks with well-defined goals.
