Unit Description

Assessment and reporting are significant aspects of the learning and teaching process. Assessment monitors the learning progress and demonstrates achievement of outcomes, and reporting makes results available to a range of audiences. The need for teachers to understand the complexities surrounding the various approaches to formative and summative assessment is an essential component of their work. Through the examination of research evidence and principles and key terms, preservice teachers explore the nature of assessment, feedback and reporting, and its importance and relevance to student learning.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Critically examine the strengths and limitations of a range of assessment items.
2.	Critically examine research evidence of effective strategies used to assess student achievement.
3.	Understand how to effectively select a range of evidence-based assessment practices to evaluate progress, adjust instruction, provided targeted feedback, and support learning.
4.	Critically examine approaches to reporting and feedback as it relates to teachers, parents, caregivers and students.
5.	Critically examine the national assessment program.
