Unit Description

The aim of this unit is to provide an introduction to the theoretical principles of finance and financial decision making in the context of the Australian institutional environment. The unit is designed to provide students who are only doing this one course in finance, an adequate basic knowledge of the subject, which will be of use to them, irrespective of the field of business in which they intend to major. This unit is also designed to provide a foundation for students who are intending to engage in further studies in this field.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Demonstrate an understanding of the major financial decisions in relation to investments, finance and dividends.
2.	Analyse and evaluate capital investment projects and the methodologies to assess projects including NPV, IRR and payback period.
3.	Define and explain the concept of risk and return, the basic principles of portfolio theory and its application to security markets.
4.	Demonstrate an understanding through the application of the capital Asset Pricing Model, standard deviation and probability theory to portfolio performance.
5.	Analyse and explain the importance of a firm's dividend policy and the tax imputation system.
