Unit Description

This unit enables students to explore current practice, including the recovery model, in mental health and undertake a critical analysis of contemporary mental health issues across the lifespan. Advanced knowledge about the context and consequences of mental illness for individuals, families and the broader community is provided. Students will explore current ethico-legal issues in mental health clinical practice. The unit provides a holistic approach to understanding and intervention in the mental health field, including the role of health promotion in the prevention of mental illness.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Critically analyse contemporary issues in mental health settings
2.	Identify and critically discuss in detail the consequences of mental illness for individuals, families and the broader community
3.	Critically evaluate the significance of policies and strategies designed to enable safe and supportive environments when working with vulnerable people across the lifespan
4.	Critically analyse ethico-legal issues in current mental health practice: including, but not limited to, family violence and alcohol and other drugs.
5.	Apply evidence-based knowledge and skill to the prevention of mental illness in a variety of socio-economic and culturally diverse communities in a health promotion role.
6.	Apply the principles of assessment and planning to the development of interventions that support individuals requiring acute and chronic management.
