Unit Description

This unit prepares students to explore and implement efficient algorithms in order to solve complex computing problems. The study of algorithms facilitates students' overall insight into the nature of complex problems as well as possible techniques to solve these problems. This unit's aim is to prepare students to effectively and efficiently develop the algorithm and design techniques required in building a program and analysing its performance. Students will also learn how to identify and implement the most appropriate existing algorithms and design techniques for any given computing problem.

This unit is reliant on on-line materials. Students must have access to a reliable high-speed broadband connection.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Solve elementary recurrence relations of specific problems through iterative and recursive methods
2.	Explain the design of algorithms for situations such as sorting, searching, pathfinding and distributed systems
3.	Use algorithmic strategies to solve and explain different problems.
4.	Compare the time and space complexity of different approaches to problem solving
