Unit Description

This unit covers the architecture, components, and operations of routers and switches in larger and more complex networks. Wide Area Network technologies and network services needed by converged applications in a complex network will also be covered. Students will be able to configure and troubleshoot routers and switches, resolve common issues with Open Shortest Path First, Enhanced Interior Gateway routing Protocol and Spanning Tree Protocol in both Internet Protocol version 4 and 6 networks, implement Wireless Local Area Network and Virtual Private Network operations in a complex network. Access to high-speed broadband is highly recommended.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Ability to configure and troubleshoot routers and switches.
2.	Design methods to mitigate security threats to a network.
3.	Ability to implement a WLAN in a small-to-medium network.
4.	Critically analyse and resolve issues in both IPv4 and IPv6 networks.
5.	Ability to implement virtual private network (VPN) operations in a complex network.
