This unit explores the richness and complexity of Australian First Nations languages. Students will consider historical and contemporary First Nations language contexts, including traditional languages and newer and emerging languages. Students will examine a number of topics concerning the structure and socio-pragmatic features of Australian First Nations languages, with case studies highlighting different language-specific properties displayed by language and language practices of different regions of Australia. Applied topics relating to language use and social practices, language revitalisation and maintenance, and educational and legal contexts will also be discussed.
