In this unit, students will critically examine concepts of social justice from theoretical, personal, policy and practical perspectives, as these relate to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in response to the Australian justice system. Students will develop a broader conceptual understanding of principles, processes and practices of social justice in Western and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies, and how these relate to perspectives of human rights and social justice. Students will investigate and evaluate how core concepts and procedures of social justice are applied in real life cases. They will examine local models of justice, and they will investigate initiatives for reforming the justice system to better serve the needs of Indigenous peoples.
