This unit offers an in-depth exploration of gender studies, examining identities, relationships, and lived experiences of ciswomen, cismen, as well as trans and sex/gender diverse individuals. Adopting an interdisciplinary and intersectional approach, the unit draws from sociology, feminism, post-colonialism, psychology, philosophy, political science, law, and literary studies to critically analyse how gender is socially constructed, regulated, criminalised, and medicalised, particularly impacting First Nations peoples, people of colour, LGBTQIA+ communities, individuals with disabilities, and neurodiverse populations.
Students will engage with key thinkers in gender studies, feminist theory, queer theory, and transgender theory, including Judith Butler, Michel Foucault, and Donna Haraway.
