This unit explores the richness and complexity of Australian First Nations languages. Students will consider historical and contemporary First Nations language environments, looking at traditional languages as well as newer and emerging languages, such as Kriol. Students will examine a number of topics concerning the structure and socio-pragmatic features of Australian First Nations languages, with case studies highlighting different language-specific properties displayed by languages and language practices in different regions of Australia. Additionally, applied topics relating to language use and social practices, language revitalisation and maintenance, and educational and legal contexts will be discussed. The unit will provide students a wider appreciation of the diversity of Australian First Nations languages.
