Unit Description

Foundational learning for medicine is provided in this 16-week semester long unit that integrates the biomedical sciences through the use of authentic clinical scenarios. Small group problem based learning and bedside teaching with simulated patients, scaffolded by lectures, tutorials and practical sessions cover an introduction to the human body, nutrition and metabolism, so that students are well prepared for clinical learning. Students will also learn about the human context of health and disease, medical professionalism, quality and safety in healthcare, evidence-based practice, research and clinical skills through community visits and workshops.

First Nations culture and health component within this unit will provide students with foundation knowledge to commence building their cultural responsiveness skill set.

The Professional Portfolio component within this unit will provide students with the means to monitor and support their acquisition of professional competencies in medicine. Supported by teaching sessions, learning resources and Professional Advisors, students will collate, reflect on and review evidence of their learning.
