Assumed Knowledge

Whilst there are no entry or pre-requisite requirements, it is recommended that participants have a recognised undergraduate degree and/or a minimum of five (5) years of professional workplace experience in any humanitarian, emergency or disaster management-related field.

Unit Description

This course equips participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively manage disaster risk within their communities. By understanding the principles of disaster risk reduction and preparedness, participants will be able to develop and implement strategies to mitigate the impacts of disasters and enhance community resilience.

1.	Describe community risk reduction and strategies.
2.	Demonstrate the process of conducting a community risk assessment.
3.	Propose intervention strategies to include in a program that addresses a specific risk issue.
4.	Describe methods for monitoring and evaluation of the community risk-reduction program.

Assessment Overview

	Assessment Task	Value (of total mark)	Related Learning Outcome/s
1.	Analysis of Community: Students analyse the community risk in a real community and identify the highest priority issues. Students should work with other agencies, non-governmental organisations, citizen groups, etc., in the community to complete the analysis. Based on the analysis, students must select one of the issues to use in the remainder of the project (1000 words).	30%	1,2,3
2.	Community Risk Reduction Plan: The CRR plan must be designed to address some aspect of the problem students selected during the analysis. The strategy shall include the identified risks, risk ranking, strategy to reduce the risk and process to implement the plan. The plan must include a budget based on local guidelines and policies and financial needs and resources (1000 words).	30%	1,2,3,4
3.	CRR Plan Presentation: The CRR plan presentation should include all the pertinent information from the analysis, the budget, plan and the benefits to the target community and/or organisation. Students should be able to answer any questions. (10-minute presentation).	40%	2,3,4
