This unit discusses woman-centred midwifery care when a woman's labour, birth and immediate postpartum period have become complex. This unit also outlines care of the woman's compromised newborn. Students will critically analyse evidence and practice regarding the medicalisation of birth from the context of woman-centred midwifery care and the impact this has on midwifery decision making and maternal and newborn health outcomes. Students will also explore interprofessional care and consultation and referral processes to other health professionals will be discussed.
Please note that MID222 is co-requisite with MID221. Students enrolling in this unit must also enrol in MID221.
