The midwife assesses, plans, provides and evaluates safe and effective midwifery care for the woman and/or baby with complex needs. The purpose of this unit is to provide the knowledge required to enable the student midwife to provide holistic, evidence-based care to childbearing women experiencing medical/surgical/obstetric complications to achieve optimal outcomes within a collaborative team.
Relevance to midwifery: Midwives follow women across the interface between the community and the hospital: in any setting, including the home, the community, hospitals, or in any other maternity service (NMBA, 2006). The midwife is required to comprehensively and accurately assess the needs of women and their babies throughout the childbearing episode and where women and/or their babies have complex needs or complications, provide midwifery care in collaboration with other health professionals.
This unit is the capstone unit that enables the student midwife to assess independently in all areas of midwifery practice and practice as a beginning practitioner. Students must also complete a Clinical Assessment Portfolio that provides a formative and summative assessment associated with a 240 hr clinical placement.
This unit is a co-requisite with MID305 Health Childbearing 4. Students must enrol for MID305 and MID306 in the same teaching period.
Online enrolment is not available and students must submit an application for special enrolment through CDU Portal. Prior to submitting a special enrolment, it is important students confirm they have met the required prerequisites of the unit.
