Unit Description

The purpose of this unit is to provide the knowledge required to enable the midwife to provide holistic, evidence-based care to infants with complex needs to achieve optimal outcomes within a collaborative team. This unit provides knowledge and clinical experience in caring for premature babies and babies with complex needs and the importance of keeping babies warm, pink and sweet in the early days of neonatal life. The student is provided theoretical knowledge about differences in caring for premature and small for gestational age infants and the rationale behind babies' stabilisation of blood sugar levels in the first few days of life. Information on the TORCH (Toxoplasmosis, Other- Herpes, Rubella, Cytomegalovirus and Hepatitis) infections is also provided in this unit. The importance of woman and family-centred care is reiterated throughout the unit.
A 120 hour clinical practicum is part of this unit which is linked to the Midwifery Practice Portfolio.
Registered Nurses who have not yet completed MID203 and MID204 prior to enrolling into this unit will need to submit an enrolment form.
Online enrolment is not available in 2021 and students enrolling in 2021 unit offerings for MID307 must submit an application for special enrolment through eForms. Prior to submitting a special enrolment, it is important students confirm they have met the required prerequisites of the unit.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Detail the influence of adverse perinatal factors on the outcome of the baby.
2.	Explain neonatal glucose homeostasis and the significance of neonatal hypoglycaemia.
3.	Stabilise an unwell or pre-term baby whilst awaiting transfer.
4.	Provide family centred care and support to the family of a neonate requiring specialist care.
5.	Perform an oro/nasogastric feed.
6.	Demonstrate midwifery competency based upon the NMBA Midwife Standards for Practice.
