This unit develops the advanced knowledge and clinical reasoning required for safe, evidence-based prescribing and therapeutic decision-making within midwifery practice. Designed for midwives seeking endorsement or expanding their scope in pharmacological care, the unit integrates foundational and advanced pharmacology, therapeutic principles, and prescribing legislation relevant to the perinatal and neonatal context.
Students will explore the Quality Use of Medicines (QUM), pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and drug safety during pregnancy and lactation. The unit emphasises critical thinking in the selection, initiation, and evaluation of pharmacological interventions, with a focus on woman-centred care, interdisciplinary collaboration, and cultural responsiveness. Ethical and legal responsibilities, including scope of practice, consultation, and documentation, are embedded throughout to ensure accountability and alignment with professional and regulatory standards.
