Unit Description

Do you feel challenged to work away from mainstream practice settings and branch out into a rural or remote location in Australia? At CDU we have recognised that rural and remote healthcare settings are rewarding but potentially challenging clinical environments for midwives and therefore we have designed a course that helps you to prepare. MID517 is part of the Graduate Certificate of Rural and Remote Midwifery Practice and this unit focuses on translating your existing midwifery clinical skills to a lower resourced setting and expanding your scope and experience to meet the needs of these diverse populations. There is a 4 day simulation block with this unit where you will advance your clinical skills set to address the extended role requirements of working in remote primary healthcare settings. Small multidisciplinary teams are a feature of rural and remote health services and, as the only midwife on the team, there will be an educational element to your role. Therefore, we have also included opportunities to develop your clinical teaching skills to enable you to educate your wider team to manage obstetric emergencies.

Important Information

This unit contains a mandatory four-day simulation block at the Alice Springs campus. Students are responsible for any associated travel and accommodation costs.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Evaluate the clinical challenges of midwifery practice in remote Australian settings compared to mainstream Australian maternity care.
2.	Reframe existing knowledge related to midwifery practice and obstetric emergencies to apply it to a low resourced clinical environment.
3.	Explain the pathophysiology of commonly occurring pregnancy conditions and justify diagnostic tests, interpret the results and evaluate common treatments.
4.	Justify women's health screening measures in rural and remote communities to enable women to understand the value of local and national women's health guidance.
5.	Demonstrate advanced clinical skills in venepuncture, cannulation, perineal suturing, speculum examination, and 6 week examination of mother and neonate.
6.	Identify and evaluate the learning needs and develop a learning plan and educational package for managing an obstetric emergency.
