This unit serves as introduction to the study of blood, blood-forming organs and the processes of blood formations. It examines the production, morphology and function of cells from the blood and bone marrow; highlighting their role in haemostasis and immune response. Students will undertake a detailed study in normal red and white cell pathology and platelet structure and function. They will be introduced to common haematological diseases. Practical activities will provide students with the skills to prepare and examine peripheral blood films for laboratory diagnosis, ensuring the safe handling of blood and knowledge of the decontamination procedures.
