Unit Description

Definitive diagnosis of many diseases often requires histological assessment, this unit will provide students the knowledge and skills to be able to undertake a histology assessment. Students will extend their knowledge of normal histology to include disease concepts, the pathological changes that occur in tissue during disease and their microscopic appearance. Additionally, students will develop skills in routine, specialised, and non-complex histology techniques, and correlate pathological findings to disease states.

1.	Perform a range of tissue processing techniques.
2.	Develop a broad knowledge of pathological disease processes in tissues at the macroscopic and microscopic level.
3.	Use laboratory staining techniques to investigate and identify tissue changes at a cellular level
4.	Describe the use of immuno histochemistry techniques in diagnosis.
5.	Apply professional integrity and ethical behaviour relevant to workplace health and safety, patient confidentiality, and code of conduct when handling human tissues.
