In this unit, students will analyse biochemical tests used in clinical chemistry laboratories with emphasis on both the physiological and biochemical aspects in determining various disease states. Students will learn to diagnose disorders based on abnormalities in acid/base homeostasis and learn to interpret results to identify disorders involving carbohydrate metabolism and kidney & liver function, while developing an awareness of the importance of reference ranges in testing procedures and maintaining laboratory safety, quality control, and automation. Additionally, students will advance their knowledge through investigating therapeutic drug monitoring and toxicology, tumour markers, fertility assessment and paediatric clinical chemistry testing. An important aspect of this unit is the ability to evaluate and communicate results using the appropriate language with a professional approach as required in the field of clinical chemistry.
