In this unit students will learn strategies to improve health outcomes and support the aspirations of indigenous populations. Fundamental to providing nursing care in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are the notions of respect for indigenous knowledge, cultural safety and the need to work in genuine partnership to support health-related choices. To achieve this the unit draws on strengths-based, person and community-centred, and solution-focused models to prepare nurses to provide culturally appropriate care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, to improve health and wellbeing outcomes across the lifespan. This unit requires the student to reflect on their own positioning as a health practitioner and the impact of cultural values and beliefs on clinical practice.
