This unit prepares students for their professional role working individually and in teams in a range of practice and professional contexts. Students will gain theoretical knowledge of effective professional practice and develop skills in applying this knowledge in relevant contexts, and in relation to complex practice and professional issues. The capacity to work effectively as an individual and in teams is vital for professional practice. Models of intraprofessional and interprofessional practice will be critically evaluated for their efficacy in providing effective professional nursing care.
Professional leadership through models of supervising and mentoring others will also be critically examined. Professional and regulatory standards of practice, legislation, codes of conduct and ethical practice, and policies in macro and micro-environments will be examined and their application in practice reviewed. In reviewing these, students will be able to critically analyse concepts such as risk management and safety to practice. Students will also critique responses to global health issues (such as pandemics and disasters) and the impact the implementation of these responses has on professional practice in the local context. Continual self-assessment of their individual learning needs is a significant aspect of professional practice. Students will be able to evaluate the place of continuing education and lifelong learning in ensuring effective professional practice.
