Unit Description

This unit focuses on patient safety and person-centred care for patients undergoing surgery. The unit examines the role of the registered nurse in anaesthetics and recovery and their contribution to creating a safe surgical environment. Student will build upon existing knowledge of anatomy and physiology as they examine the pathophysiological changes that occur across body systems. Drawing on contemporary evidence and research students will apply critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills to contextualise their practice.

Important Information

This unit is only available to students enrolled in the UPERN1 Graduate Certificate of Perioperative Nursing and SCNU01 Master of Clinical Nursing.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Critically discuss the role and scope of the anaesthetic and recovery nurse and the influence of policies, standards, and guidelines on safe nursing practice
2.	Analyse and justify the nursing care provided to patients in the anaesthetic and recovery areas related to pathophysiology and contemporary evidence.
3.	Interrogate assessment approaches used in anaesthetic and recovery nursing and their influence on safe patient care.
4.	Critically reflect on current practice and the role of evidence and research in creating a safe perioperative environment.
5.	Challenge contemporary practice impact on creating a person-centred and culturally safe perioperative environment for patients and staff.
