Unit Description

Microbiology for Healthcare Professionals will provide students with fundamental knowledge regarding microorganisms and their impact on human health. Students will gain knowledge of the biology and diversity of microorganisms and of important bacterial, fungal, viral, and parasitic infections affecting humans. Students will also gain key insights into the transmission of infectious diseases and methods to reduce transmission, with a focus on infection control in the healthcare environment.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Describe the diversity of microorganisms in terms of structure, physiology, and reproduction.
2.	Demonstrate an understanding of some of the common bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic infections of humans.
3.	Characterise the human innate and adaptive immune response to infection.
4.	Explain important aspects of transmission and prevention of communicable diseases.
5.	Apply the principles of infection prevention and control to healthcare settings.
