Unit Description

There have been major advances in areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in modern times. This unit provides a basic introduction to physical, chemical and biological processes in science and technology within the context of current environmental issues. The unit consists of modules designed for STEM and non-STEM students, and assumes limited knowledge of science and mathematics. Modules examine solar and renewables, climate change, biodiversity and other topics with an emphasis on northern Australia. A STEM practices approach is employed using real-world scenarios to enhance skills and knowledge of Science and its role in society.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Demonstrate knowledge of factors that influence global warming and the adoption of renewable energy, and of reasons for ongoing biodiversity declines.
2.	Evaluate the accuracy of precedents and predictions based on scientific data.
3.	Effectively communicate scientific information to diverse audiences.
4.	Apply practical knowledge of technology to address problem solving in real-world contexts.
