Unit Description

This unit will use the National Quality and Safety in Health Services Medication Standards to help students develop their knowledge of pharmacology and quality medication management. Students will be introduced to the fundamental science concepts in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics across broad classes of medication.

This focuses on the role of role of several health care professionals' and their responsibility in medication management, including safe administration practices, medication errors, adverse effects and drug interactions. Students will explore the benefit of person-centred medication management whilst applying critically thinking to legal and ethical considerations for at risk population groups across the lifespan.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Apply the principles of quality use of medicines to practice across varying clinical contexts and healthcare professions, such as registered nurses and paramedics.
2.	Compare the principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of drugs used in the treatment of diseases of differing body systems.
3.	Critically appraise the suitability of drugs as treatment for diseases, body systems and/or people, including indications, clinical effect, mechanism of action & adverse effects of drugs.
4.	Apply working knowledge of dosage calculations of medications and the legal and safety implications of medication administrations.
5.	Identify and evaluate strategies using current evidence-based practice to minimise risk when administering medication.
