| This unit offers an overview of medically significant bacteria, focusing on their collection, quality, detection, and laboratory diagnosis. Students will gain a theoretical and technical understanding of pathogenic bacteria, covering their aetiology, habitat, transmission, pathogenesis, and laboratory diagnosis. Students will explore host-pathogen interactions, virulence and virulence factors, opportunistic pathogens, zoonoses, and predisposing factors to disease. Additionally, students will develop an understanding of antimicrobial therapy and resistance. Practical skills will be developed in the safe handling, cultivation, and isolation of pathogenic bacteria, through media selection, and biochemical and molecular tests. |
