Unit Description

This unit will expand on the knowledge students acquired during anatomy and physiology. Students will develop an understanding of the structure and function of cellular components, tissues and organs, at a microscopic level of tissues and the major human systems, such as nervous, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, respiratory and urinary. Students will further be provided with a working knowledge of tissue fixation, processing, embedding, sectioning and staining, which is required in a diagnostic laboratory. Students will also learn about special fixation and staining methods, artefacts and pigments and diagnostic cytology.

Important information for Semester 2 2024 Offering. The weekly lecture and tutorial sessions will be delivered online during the Semester 2 teaching period, and the practical sessions will be delivered from the 4th to 17th November 2024 at Casuarina Campus.

1.	Demonstrate an understanding of the basic structure and function of specific cells, tissues and organs
2.	Identify various cells, tissues and organs using a light microscope
3.	Describe the basic tissue processing and staining techniques
4.	Understand diagnostic cytology
5.	Demonstrate an understanding of sectioning and staining quality assurance and controls
6.	Describe the role of immuno histochemistry in pathology testing.
