Unit Description

This unit is designed to expand upon a basic microbiology and complement clinical bacteriology. Students will develop an understanding and appreciation for the medically important viral, fungal and parasitic infections of the human body. They will study the characteristics, pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of viruses, fungi and parasites as well as additional infections involving vectors, animals and compromised hosts. Students will undertake practicals to develop techniques for the isolation and identification of viruses, fungi and parasites.

1.	Explain the pathophysiology of human diseases caused by fungi, parasites and viruses, and their causative agents.
2.	Evaluate methods used for the laboratory-based diagnosis and investigation of diseases cause by fungi, parasites and viruses.
3.	Discuss and evaluate the approaches for treating or otherwise managing diseases caused by fungi, parasites and viruses.
4.	Perform laboratory -based techniques for diagnosing diseases caused by fungi, parasites and viruses.
